Vocabulary

 

1.atmosphere /'ætməsf,ɪr/ (n.)

  •  (1) the whole mass of air that surrounds the Earth

  •  (2) a mass of gases that surround a planet or star

  •  (3) the air in a particular place or area

  •  

  • Experts have noticed changes in the atmosphere.

  • The planets have different atmospheres.


  • The food was good but the restaurant has no atmosphere.

2.measles /m'izəlz/ (n.)

 (1) a disease that causes a fever and red spots on the skin

It brought us a measles vaccine, a rubella vaccine, a mumps vaccine, and a heart transplant.


3.wed /w'ɛd/ (v.)

 (1) to bring or join (two things) together

  1. They will wed in the fall.

  2. The actress wed her fourth husband last year.

  3. The novel weds tragedy and comedy.

4.psyche /s'ɑɪki/ (n.)

 (1) the soul, mind, or personality of a person or group

He translated the Cid of Corneille, and wrote a poem on the subject of psyche, based upon the well-known Greek myth.


5.disfigur /dɪsf'ɪgjɚ/ (v.)

 (1) to spoil or damage the appearance of (something or someone)

His face was disfigured by a scar.

6.pox /p'ɑks/ (n.)

 (1) a disease that causes a rash on the skin

"Let the demon of small-pox depart !"  


7.soul /s'ol/ (n.)

  •  (1) the spiritual part of a person that is believed to give life to the body and in many religions is believed to live forever

  •  (2) a person's deeply felt moral and emotional nature

  •  (3) the ability of a person to feel kindness and sympathy for others, to appreciate beauty and art, etc.

  •  

  • He could not escape the guilt that he felt in the inner recesses of his soul.

8.recount /rɪk'ɑʊnt/ (n.)

  (1) a second count of the votes in a very close election

The election was very close and the loser demanded a recount.

  •  (1) the quality of being easy to understand or use

  •  (2) the state or quality of being plain or not fancy or complicated

  •  (3) something that is simple or ordinary but enjoyable

  •

  •  (1) a written symbol for any of the numbers 0 to 9

  •  (2) a finger or toe

 (1) a plant with small green leaves that are used to season or decorate food

Broccoli and radishes grow well, turnips (but not every year), lettuce and chervil succeed sometimes, but parsley cannot be reared.


21.likelihood /l'ɑɪklih,ʊd/ (n.)

 (1) the chance that something will happen

  1. There is a strong likelihood that he will be reelected.

22.pursue /pɚs'u/ (v.)

  •  (1) to follow and try to catch or capture (someone or something) for usually a long distance or time

  •  (2) to try to get or do (something) over a period of time

  •  (3) to be involved in (an activity)

23.spare /sp'ɛr/ (v.)

  •  (1) to choose not to punish or harm (someone)

24.strenuous /str'ɛnjuəs/ (adj.)

 (1) requiring or showing great energy and effort

Today has been a very strenuous day.

The proposal has faced strenuous opposition.

25.volunteer /v,ɑlənt'ɪr/ (n.)

  •  (1) a person who chooses to join the military

  •  (2) a person who does work without getting paid to do it

  •
